International Conference on Engineering Design / The Design Society

ICED is the Design Society’s biennial flagship event, uniting global researchers, practitioners, and educators to share advances in design. Covering methods, processes, human factors, management, and emerging technologies, it fosters academia–industry collaboration through keynotes, papers, workshops, and networking, strengthening the international design community.

From many perspectives, collaboration between science and industry is an essential element to enrich the knowledge foundation on product development in a targeted way and with high-quality input. The dualism between science and industry is necessary, as the past shows that generating knowledge alone is not sufficient. Only the application of knowledge improves the ability to act and leads to the development of competence, which in the long term can consolidate the competitiveness of companies. The transition from a knowledge society to a competence society can only work in collaboration between industry and science.

The conference theme of connecting two worlds is also reflected in our selection of venues. While the workshops, welcome and farewell reception are held at Hamburg University of Technology, where you get to know our home of research, the main conference days with different session formats take place at the Grand Elysée Hotel in the heart of the city.

The Design Society is built on the foundations laid by the WDK Society, based on a common interest in engineering design. Many dedicated individuals have contributed to the development of WDK and the ICED series of conferences.
